Behaviourly

Behaviourly is a desktop application for designing and deploying power-intensity sequences that control responsive art objects. Artists can experiment with sequences in the studio and export programs for use in exhibitions. Behaviourly has powered art installations in multiple venues.

Context

Artists need to test sequence designs before using them to control art objects in an exhibition. Behaviourly supports both studio experimentation and deployment in gallery installations.

My role and contribution

Software engineer. I developed the application together with artist development partners.

How it works

In experimentation mode, an artist can create and test sequences by sending them to a serially connected, Arduino-controlled circuit. Finished designs can be exported as standalone Arduino programs that control multiple art objects on the gallery floor.

On-going work includes support for video analysis of active material objects and machine learned sequence generation.

Outcome

Behaviourly has powered works by Ana Piñeyro, including Material Instincts, presented at Oscillation at the Centre Culturel Canadien in Paris, and Shadows of Stability, presented at Surface de réparation at Magasins Généraux in Pantin. See also Material Instincts (study).
