Fannr: Flickr Annotator

Fannr (Flickr Annotator) was a prototype application that helped users annotate their Flickr photos by recommending tags and locations.

Context

Choosing useful tags and remembering where a photo was taken can be difficult. Fannr explored how information from different groups of photos could assist with both tasks.

My role and contribution

Applied Scientist. I developed the prototype at the Yahoo! Research Lab in Barcelona based on my own research work.

How it works

For an individual photo, Fannr provided two kinds of assistance:

  • Tag recommendation: Suggested tags the user might add to the photo.
  • Location recommendation: Suggested possible locations to help the user remember where the photo was taken.

Recommendations drew on the user’s own photos, their contacts’ photos, other users’ photos, visually similar photos, and—when a photo had location information—geographically nearby photos. Once the user selected tags or a location, Fannr updated the photo’s annotation on Flickr through the Flickr API.

Outcome

The prototype demonstrated photo-annotation support that combined recommendations from different social and visual contexts with updates to Flickr.
